Berkeley has agreed to repeal its controversial ban on natural gas appliances in new buildings.
In a settlement agreement with the California Restaurant Association, the city agreed to immediately stop enforcement of the ban as it takes steps to repeal it. Berkeley was the first city in the country to pass such an ordinance, leading to dozens of similar measures in cities across California. The CRA argued that the ban violated federal energy law, In April of last year, judges on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed, ruling against the ban.
