California Transportation Commission Recommending $73 Million For Highway 37 Improvement Project

A significant funding boost is on the horizon for the Highway 37 improvement project. According to a report from the Press Democrat, California Transportation Commission staff are recommending $73 million in gas tax funds for Phase 2, which focuses on eastbound improvements.

This critical project aims to widen a 10-mile stretch from Sears Point to Mare Island, tackling both traffic bottlenecks and frequent flooding. Highway 37, used by 40,000 commuters daily, faces a serious threat of regular inundation by 2040 due to sea level rise. Caltrans spokesperson Bart Ney highlighted that this $73 million covers nearly 30% of Phase 2’s estimated $251 million cost. The overall three-phase project is expected to cost around $500 million.

Marin County Supervisor Stephanie Moulton-Peters said if the funding is approved later this month, work on this section could begin in 2026. This project is seen as a vital step in improving daily commutes and preparing for environmental changes.
