A controversial new development project called “Esmeralda” is sparking a heated debate in Cloverdale, as residents worry the massive proposal could “blow them out” of their small country town.
According to the Press Democrat, the 266-acre plan features 600 homes, a resort, and an elementary school, but locals at a recent town hall voiced serious concerns over the lack of affordable housing and the 20% increase in water demand it would place on the city.
While developers tout a multi-million dollar boost to the local tax base, many fifth-generation residents say the high-priced, “modern” village clashes with their community’s industrial roots and identity.
