Local winemaker Akiko Freeman is being honored for her global impact on the arts and agriculture.
Per the Press Democrat, the co-founder of Sebastopol’s Freeman Winery will receive the “Game Changer Award” from the Asia Society of Northern California at a ceremony in San Francisco on April 23.
Freeman, a pioneer in the industry, previously made history as the first woman to receive Japan’s Green-White Achievement Award for agricultural excellence. Her cool-climate pinot noirs have gained international acclaim, famously served at high-profile White House dinners for Japanese Prime Ministers. .
Freeman joins a distinguished group of 2026 honorees, including Emmy-winning producer Janet Yang and U.S. Poet Laureate Arthur Sze.
The award recognizes her leadership in bridging cultures through the craft of California winemaking.
