Sonoma County Prepares for Annual Spring Shake Out Drill

Sonoma County residents are urged to “drop, cover, and hold on” this Saturday, April 18, at 10 a.m. as part of the annual Spring Shake Out earthquake drill.

According to the Press Democrat, organized by the Department of Emergency Management, the exercise coincides with the 120th anniversary of the historic 1906 quake to remind the public that disaster can strike at any time. Officials are encouraging families to use the drill to secure heavy furniture and stock emergency kits with seven days of essential supplies.

Participants can register online to receive a test alert through the SoCo Alert system when the simulated shaking begins. The month-long preparedness effort also includes community resource fairs, featuring a mobile earthquake simulator at Altimira Middle School on April 15.

Emergency Director Jeff DuVall emphasizes that having a practiced plan in place is the most critical step toward ensuring family safety.
