The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously today to take the first step toward putting a renewal of the local parks sales tax on the November ballot.
If approved by voters, the measure would extend the existing one-eighth-cent tax without raising current rates, keeping more than fifteen million dollars flowing annually to regional and city parks. The funding is currently scheduled to expire in 2029, and officials warn its loss could severely impact trail maintenance, wildfire prevention, and public access.
Board Chair Rebecca Hermosillo noted the move allows voters to decide on continuing this critical investment in safe, outdoor spaces.
The tax splits revenue between county regional parks and all nine local cities, and the proposal includes strict independent oversight to ensure funds are spent correctly.
