Santa Rosa City Schools has tapped veteran educator Monica Thomas to serve as its new superintendent, marking the district’s third leadership change in just three years.
Thomas, a longtime administrator within the Oakland Unified School District, will officially take the helm of Sonoma County’s largest school system on July 1st. Currently serving as Oakland’s deputy chief of continuous improvement, she brings more than two decades of education and leadership experience to the role.
The school board is expected to formally approve her appointment next week as the district faces declining enrollment, budget deficits, and community tension over recent cuts.
Thomas succeeds former leadership at a critical time, inherited with the responsibility of stabilizing staffing and navigating the district’s ongoing fiscal challenges.
