The Sonoma Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees will hold a public meeting next Thursday, June 11, to discuss establishing an official campus flag policy.
The Sonoma Index-Tribune reports the upcoming discussion follows the controversial removal and quick reinstatement of a progressive pride flag at Sonoma Valley High School this past January.
Superintendent Jason Sutter, who took office in March, will present findings after gathering input from students, teachers, and school organizations over the last few months. District officials recently surveyed over one thousand high school students, aiming to center student voices and well-being at the heart of the debate.
While students and community groups are advocating for the flag to fly year-round, the school board will not be voting on any official policy changes during this initial discussion.
