The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved a resolution protecting access to medically necessary healthcare, including gender-affirming care.
According to the Press Democrat, the local measure comes as a direct response to recent federal policies from the Trump administration aimed at weakening transgender rights and limiting local grant funding.
County officials partnered with regional parent groups and LGBTQIA+ nonprofits to draft the resolution, which aligns local policy with protective California state laws. While the vote drew some opposition during public comment, Supervisor Lynda Hopkins strongly defended the move, stating it is about medical freedom and not letting politics get in the way of healthcare.
Supervisors emphasized that the goal is simply to ensure all local children have access to a happy, healthy, and successful life.
