Novato Woman Faces Second Murder Charge in DUI Crash That Killed Family

A tragic highway collision has led to a second murder charge for a Novato woman. Prosecutors in Sonoma County increased the charges against Kenia Alegria on Thursday, following the death of a second family member.

The February 11th crash on Highway 101 near Petaluma initially claimed the life of Alegria’s mother at the scene. This week, her aunt also succumbed to her injuries. Authorities allege Alegria was driving with a blood-alcohol level at least twice the legal limit when the crash occurred.

Under California law, a person with prior DUI awareness can be charged with murder in a fatal DUI case. Alegria, who was already facing one count of murder, now faces two. She remains in custody and is scheduled to return to court on March 26th.
