New Mini Soccer Fields Proposed For Downtown Sebastopol

The Sebastopol City Council has signaled unanimous support for a plan to bring temporary soccer courts to a vacant downtown lot.

According to the Press Democrat, the Western Sonoma County Youth Soccer League, or WESCO, aims to build two modular “mini fields” at the corner of Depot Street and Petaluma Avenue, the site of a long-stalled hotel project. The temporary pitches would serve over 1,300 local players for up to two years while the league struggles with a shortage of safe, local practice space.

While the project would be funded entirely by donations, the proposal faced scrutiny over potential environmental impacts on the Laguna and ethical concerns regarding a council member’s ties to the league.

If final zoning and city approvals are granted, the new courts could be ready for play within four to six months.
