Sonoma Native At Center Of Historic Federal Protest Case

A legal battle involving Sonoma County native Baji Mavalwalla has become a national flashpoint over the right to protest federal immigration policies.

According to the Press Democrat, Mavalwalla and eight others, known as “The Spokane 9,” face federal conspiracy charges for allegedly disrupting an ICE detention in Washington last summer. Critics and former prosecutors have questioned the case’s legitimacy, citing a rapid turnover of U.S. Attorneys and potential political motivation from the Department of Justice.

The high-profile prosecution has even spurred Baji’s father, a fellow military veteran, to run for Congress to challenge the administration’s aggressive deportation and enforcement tactics. While six defendants accepted plea deals, Mavalwalla is heading to trial next month to defend his First Amendment rights.

His legal team argues the government is attempting to suppress dissent through unprecedented felony charges.
