Critical repairs are coming to the Laguna Wastewater Treatment Plant, serving Santa Rosa and surrounding communities. The aging facility is facing serious structural issues, including earthquake vulnerability and corrosion.
A recent study revealed significant deficiencies in the plant’s headworks, where raw sewage is initially processed. A $7 million project is planned to extend the headworks’ lifespan by about 10 years, including seismic retrofitting and repairs to corroded components. While a complete overhaul is needed, it would cost an estimated $300 million.
The city is seeking FEMA grant funding to cover a large portion of the seismic work, with the remainder funded by capital funds from partner agencies. Design work begins in March, with construction expected to start next summer.
