Facing a $5 million deficit and a mass exodus of teachers, the Petaluma City Schools district is asking voters to approve a new parcel tax.
The Petaluma Argus-Courier reports the measure would charge over 20,000 property owners $129 annually for eight years to raise more than $3 million a year. The funds would be used to retain teachers, and maintain programs and class sizes.
This is not the district’s first attempt at a parcel tax, as a similar measure for high schools failed in 2024. The new measure, which needs a two-thirds vote to pass, is slated to appear on a special election ballot this November.
