SRCS Sees Largest Enrollment Decline In A Decade

Santa Rosa City Schools has seen its largest student decline in a decade, losing over 500 students—a 4% drop—at the start of the school year. According to the Press Democrat, the numbers released in a new report are likely a response to the district’s controversial plan to close six campuses and move middle schoolers to high schools.

Although the exodus is tied to the district’s existing budget problems, officials say they had prepared for an even greater loss. The numbers were in line with their financial projections, so no immediate, deeper budget cuts are necessary.

District leaders say they will now focus on improving attendance and making academic programs more competitive to attract and retain students.
