Santa Rosa To Begin Enforcing Massage Business Ordinance

Santa Rosa will begin enforcing its tough new ordinance regulating massage businesses this Sunday, October 19th.

The law, passed to address concerns over illicit operations and potential human trafficking, requires all shops to be registered with the city. The six-month compliance grace period is now over and unregistered businesses will face citations. The Press Democrat reports new rules also ban “red flag” activities like late-night hours and blocked windows.

City officials note a low compliance rate, with only about 50 of roughly 130 businesses having applied. However, they stress the ordinance is necessary to ensure all operations are safe and legitimate. The city has recently seen success in cracking down on illicit activity, including arrests and the rescue of suspected trafficking victims.

Code enforcement officers are now prepared to begin inspections.
