Sonoma County Supervisors Update Commercial Cannabis Rules

Sonoma County supervisors are approving sweeping new rules for commercial cannabis operations.

The board voted 4-1 Tuesday to adopt the first major overhaul of the county’s cannabis regulations since 2018. The updated rules include new setback distances, allow cannabis-related events and create a “crop swap” program that lets farmers replace existing crops with cannabis under certain conditions.

Supervisor David Rabbitt cast the lone “no” vote, arguing the ordinance doesn’t adequately protect neighborhoods and predicting it will trigger lawsuits.

The new regulations take effect July 1.
