A 77-year-old man will face trial for a murder committed over fifty years ago in East San Rafael.
According to the Marin Independent Journal, on Wednesday, a Marin County jury found Michael Eugene Mullen mentally competent to stand trial for the 1973 killing of Nina Fischer. The case went cold for decades until 2021, when investigators used DNA evidence to link Mullen to the crime.
Despite defense claims of cognitive decline and terminal illness, jurors ruled Mullen is capable of understanding the legal proceedings. He remains held without bail and is scheduled to enter a plea on January 8th.
