Bomb Squad Called To Sonoma State University

An unusual afternoon of magnet fishing at Sonoma State University led to a visit from the bomb squad Thursday after a hobbyist pulled a suspected explosive from the campus lakes.

The Press Democrat reports the discovery was made around 5:45 p.m. in the northwest section of University Lakes. SSU Police Chief Nader Oweis says officers immediately cordoned off the area and called in the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department. A bomb squad detective has since moved the device to an off-campus facility to safely neutralize it.

No injuries were reported, and officials say there was never an imminent threat to the public. If you have any information regarding how that device ended up in the water, campus police want to hear from you at 707-664-4444.
