A high-profile battle is brewing for California’s 2nd Congressional District as author and rancher Nicolette Hahn Niman launches a challenge against veteran Rep. Jared Huffman.
The Marin Independent Journal reports Hahn Niman, an environmental attorney with ties to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., entered the race following a bitter legal dispute over the removal of cattle ranching from Point Reyes National Seashore. She accuses Huffman of orchestrating a “secret” deal to phase out local food production, while Huffman defends the settlement as a way for the community to move forward.
The race takes place in a newly reshaped district that now stretches from the Marin coast all the way to the Nevada border.
With the June primary approaching, the contest highlights a sharp divide over land use and the future of local agriculture.
