The race for Sonoma County’s 2nd District supervisor seat has been blown wide open following the surprise retirement of incumbent David Rabbitt.
Per the Press Democrat, four candidates are now scrambling to claim the open seat, including Petaluma school board member Joanna Paun and Penngrove rancher John King. Joining the fray are two newcomers: professional motorcycle racer Shelina Moreda and Cotati Mayor Sylvia Lemus, the city’s first Latina council member.
Experts predict the expanded field makes a November runoff highly likely, as no single candidate may snag a majority in the June primary. With voting starting via mail in early May, candidates have just six weeks to sway voters on issues ranging from rural water sustainability to agricultural protections.
This high-stakes contest is expected to define the future political leanings of the county’s Board of Supervisors.
