Fiber Optic Expansion Speeds Up Along Highway 101

Drivers on Highway 101 between Santa Rosa and Cloverdale may notice colorful cables along the roadside, marking a major push to bring high-speed broadband to underserved communities.

According to the Press Democrat, this “Middle-Mile” project, managed by Caltrans and fueled by $150 million in funding, aims to bridge connectivity gaps exposed during the pandemic. Officials report the stretch between Windsor and Cloverdale is already 95 percent complete, with a goal of total completion by the end of the year.

While coastal areas like Gleason Beach remain a challenge due to rugged terrain, the expansion leverages federal funds to ensure reliable internet for remote workers and rural residents alike. Multiple providers, including AT&T and Comcast, are also slated to improve infrastructure from the Marin border up to Healdsburg.

It is a massive, statewide effort to ensure no Sonoma County resident is left in a digital dead zone.
