A California appellate court has ruled that the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office must comply with subpoenas from the county’s civilian oversight agency, IOLERO.
The Press Democrat reports the decision stems from a 2024 whistleblower investigation and reinforces the authority of voter-approved Measure P.
The court clarified that subpoena powers for oversight bodies are automatic under state law and cannot be overridden by deputy labor agreements. This landmark ruling is being hailed as a major win for transparency that could set a precedent for sheriff oversight across all fifty-eight California counties.
While the Sheriff’s Office has until April 24 to appeal to the State Supreme Court, advocates say the decision provides much-needed clarity for civilian watchdogs statewide.
