Convicted Felon Arrested After Loaded Handgun Found During Traffic Stop

A Santa Rosa man is back in custody after a Thursday night traffic stop led to the discovery of an illegal firearm.

Officers with the Special Enforcement Team pulled over a vehicle on Jennings Avenue, where they recognized 30-year-old passenger Alfonso Cruz from previous encounters.

Because Cruz was on active probation, police conducted a search that uncovered a loaded, unregistered 9mm Glock pistol and extra ammunition. Cruz, who has a prior felony conviction, is legally prohibited from possessing any weapons or ammo. He was booked into the Sonoma County jail on multiple felony charges, including being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

The arrest is part of a targeted effort by Santa Rosa Police to curb rising gun violence throughout the city.
