High winds are battering the North Coast this morning, leaving thousands of Sonoma County residents in the dark.
The Press Democrat reports a powerful windstorm moved through the region overnight, with gusts topping 80 miles per hour in the Mayacamas Mountains and hitting nearly 80 miles per hour along the coast. The heavy winds have downed trees and power lines across the county, causing road closures on Highway 1, Crane Canyon Road, and several routes near Sebastopol and Cotati.
As of 6:00 a.m., PG&E reports over 7,000 customers are without power, primarily in western and coastal communities.
Forecasters warn that while rain is falling, wind remains the primary threat. A beach hazard warning is also in effect through Friday morning, with 20-foot waves and blowing sand creating dangerous conditions. Officials are urging everyone to stay away from the shoreline and use extreme caution if you must travel.
Expect a second wave of wind to hit the area late tonight into early Thursday.
