Sonoma Valley Board to Revisit Pride Flag Policy in June

The Sonoma Valley Unified School District will wait until June to formally discuss its school flag policies following the controversial removal and restoration of the Pride flag earlier this year.

The Sonoma Index-Tribune reports new Superintendent Jason Sutter, who took the helm on March 1st, requested the delay to gather student perspectives and study how neighboring districts handle flag displays. The issue gained national attention in January when the flag, which had flown since 2019, was briefly removed without public board input.

Board President David Bell has since apologized for the move, acknowledging the need for a transparent, well-informed public discussion.

District officials say the goal of the upcoming meeting is to ensure future policies center around student voice and the district’s commitment to all students.
