Oldest Sonoma County Major Leaguer

Sonoma County’s centenarian ex-major league ballplayer got quite the welcome from his former team during their recent Bay Area stop.

With the New York Yankees playing the Giants at San Francisco’s Oracle Park this past weekend, 100-year-old Art Schallock was the guest of honor in the visitors’ clubhouse before the series finale Sunday.

Schallock, who celebrated his 100th birthday in April surrounded by family and friends at his assisted living facility in Sonoma, chatted with Yankees manager Aaron Boone before New York completed a three-game sweep of the Giants.
Schallock, , is the oldest living former major leaguer. He played for the Bronx Bombers from 1951-55 and was initially called up to take Mickey Mantle’s roster spot during a rough spell that saw the slugger sent down to the minors.
