The new SMART Train extension to Windsor, which opened with much fanfare last month, has hit a temporary snag.
The Press Democrat reports when the Windsor station opened on May 31st, it was hailed by business and tourism leaders eager for new visitors, and residents welcomed a convenient commute. But with many homes close to the tracks, the constant early-morning train horns quickly became a loud complaint from residents, prompting the town to push for a “quiet zone.”
Last week, SMART temporarily suspended three early-morning southbound trains, departing between 4:35 and 5:30 AM, until the Federal Railroad Administration approves the quiet zone. Windsor Town Manager Jon Davis reports an “overwhelming amount of positive response and appreciation” for the pause, with residents across town relieved by the silence.
