“Week Without Driving” Exposes Flaws In Sonoma County’s Public Transit System

A recent “Week Without Driving” experiment exposed key gaps in Sonoma County’s public transit system, according to participants.

The Press Democrat reports local leaders, including several Supervisors and SRJC officials, ditched their cars for a week to rely solely on buses, bikes, and walking. While some morning trips were smooth, many found the return trips and connections difficult.

An SRJC official noted the return bus dropped him off far from home. Organizers stressed that the goal was not to shame the system, but to show how vital improvements are. Students noted they often have to “pick their courses around the bus schedule” because of limited evening service.

The experiences gained are intended to encourage leaders to become stronger advocates for fixing the transit system for residents who have no choice but to use it.
