The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors has approved up to $1 million in emergency funding for the Redwood Empire Food Bank.
This aid is specifically to feed residents affected by the disruption of CalFresh benefits due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.
The money will allow the Food Bank to expand distribution through the end of January, offsetting an anticipated 20 to 40 percent surge in households seeking food assistance. Nearly 43,000 Sonoma County residents rely on CalFresh, California’s version of SNAP.
The Board is scheduled to consider declaring a local emergency on December 9th to further organize the county’s response.
