SRPD K9 Locates Illegal Firearm

A Santa Rosa Police Department K9 has once again proven his worth by locating an illegal firearm.

On the evening of December 14th, SRPD officers responded to a disturbance on Delfos Court. During their investigation, police focused on 30-year-old Nicholas Vanthong, a Santa Rosa resident who was prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior felony conviction and was also subject to search by court order.

K9 Ghost, a cross-trained patrol and firearm detection dog, was brought in to assist. Ghost quickly alerted officers to Vanthong’s vehicle, where they discovered a 9mm revolver and ammunition concealed in a cardboard box under clothing on the front seat. Vanthong had been sitting in the driver’s seat, within reach of the weapon, when officers first arrived.

Vanthong was arrested and booked into Sonoma County Jail on multiple felony charges, including carrying a concealed firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The SRPD praised K9 Ghost and his handler, Officer Gonzales-Campos, for their work. K9 Ghost is known for his skill; he was previously recognized for locating 13 firearms in 2023 alone.
