Heavy rains have triggered a major road collapse along the Russian River, cutting off a key route to the Sonoma Coast.
The Press Democrat reports a 100-foot stretch of eastbound Highway 116 near Monte Rio is closed today after the storm-swollen river undercut the roadway. Officials say the river ate away nearly 75 feet of the highway embankment near Monte Cristo Avenue.
Gold Ridge Fire Assistant Chief Steve Baxman warns that the area remains dangerous and the road must be blocked to prevent vehicles from sliding into the water.
Traffic is currently being diverted into a single lane as crews assess the damage. While the rain is expected to taper off, the Russian River is still rising and is projected to crest at 29 feet this afternoon. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, and no homes are currently at risk.
