A recent investigation into a 2022 fatal shooting by a Sonoma County sheriff’s deputy has reopened a legal battle over police oversight.
The county’s civilian watchdog, IOLERO, was unable to complete its probe because deputies refused to be interviewed. According to the Press Democrat, the dispute is the latest in a long-running conflict stemming from Measure P, the 2020 ballot initiative that gave IOLERO expanded powers.
The Sheriff’s Office argues the watchdog is overstepping its legal authority, while advocates for police reform say it’s an attempt to resist transparency.
County supervisors say the issue may ultimately be resolved in court or at the ballot box.
