The federal government has notified Santa Rosa officials that it plans to vacate the 77,000 square foot John F. Shea Federal Building on Sonoma Ave in Downtown. The move is part of a broad effort by the General Services Administration to consolidate and save $1 billion dollars over 10 years. The building opened 50 years ago, and currently houses the US Bankruptcy court, the local IRS and NOAA offices and apparently needs some $11 million dollars in repairs. No word on what will become of the building or when the offices will be vacated, but it now creates a huge redevelopment opportunity in downtown.
