A ninety-one-year-old resident of Varenna at Fountaingrove is suing the high-end Santa Rosa senior community, alleging elder abuse and unfair business practices.
According to the Press Democrat, the lawsuit claims management barred Virginia King’s private, full-time caregivers from helping her, insisting she instead pay the facility for assistance.
The complaint alleges this policy left King, who has Alzheimer’s, neglected for long periods, and claims it is part of a scheme to force out longtime tenants to resell units at higher rates. Gallaher Companies, the facility’s owner, has categorically denied the allegations, stating they are working with the Department of Social Services.
This legal battle comes on the heels of Varenna recently being fined by state inspectors for unrelated fire safety violations on the property.
